Canada has slashed its estimate for production of lentils in 2017-18 (Aug-Jul) to 3.1 million tonne, 11.4% lower than its forecast in March, due to a fall in the area seeded. For 2017-18, area seeded in Canada is expected to decrease to 2.0 million ha due to lower expected returns compared to the previous spring. In 2017-18, the supply of lentils is estimated to fall to 3.54 million tonne compared with the forecast of 3.94 mln tn in March. Export of lentils in 2017-18 is estimated to stand at 2.2 million tonne, compared with the forecast of 2.3 million tonne in March. Production of peas in 2017-18 is estimated at 4.25 million tonne, while prices are seen at $720-$750 a tn. Output of chana during the period is estimated at 145,000 tonne while prices are seen at $960-$990 per tonne.
