Gram and tur prices shot up in Nagpur Agriculture Produce and Marketing Committee (APMC) here on increased demand from local millers amid thin supply from producing belts. Prices of tur in Akola, Maharashtra, declined as arrivals doubled amid higher realization for the commodity. Prices have been hovering around four-month highs recently, due to an improvement in sentiment for the commodity after the government limited annual imports to 200,000 tonne.

Apart from restricted arrivals from growing belts, strong demand for oil mills in spot markets mainly lifted mustard seed prices in futures trade here.

India soybean gains 1% in line with CBOT cues; CPO down.

Futures contracts in the edible oil basket traded mixed, with soybean and mustard rising and crude palm oil and refined soyoil lower on domestic exchanges. Paring losses of the previous session, soybean futures on National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange ended 1.2% higher tracking gains in Chicago Board of Trade.

NCDEX soybean up as pests hit crop in Madhya Pradesh.

Futures contracts of soybean rose on the NCDEX due to reports of insect attacks on the crop in many parts of Madhya Pradesh. Incidents of white grub, semi-looper caterpillar, girdle beetle and white fly attacks have been reported in key growing areas of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Yield may be less this year as a result of these attacks. Most-active October contract on the NCDEX traded at up 0.2% from the previous close.

Bitter row between north, south sugar mills over imports.

Sugar mills in drought affected Tamil Nadu have demanded tariff-rate quota (TRQ) import of 6 lakh tonne of raw sugar at zero import duty to help minimize losses. The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), has been opposing imports, claiming that the country has enough stock of the sweetener. However, South Indian Sugar Mills Association, Tamil Nadu (SISMA-TONNE) has approached the central government, requesting it to allow sugar import. Officials aware of the matter told ET that the government is reviewing the situation and may accept their demand, as it not only helps keep sugar prices in southern India under control but also enable sugar mills clear cane farmers dues.

Prices of mustard seed were up in Jaipur, owing to improved demand from oil millers and crushers, coupled with a decline in arrivals. Increased demand for mustard oil due to the ongoing rainy season is also supporting prices.
