Barley prices were up in Jaipur, due to a decline in supply of the grain coupled with an increase in demand from stockists and feed sector. New crop arrivals of barley were estimated at 50,000 bags (1bag=85kg) compared with 90,000 bags. Supplies are lower because farmers are holding back their produce in the expectation of prices to rise in the coming days. A pickup in demand from malt companies following the onset of summer also supported barley prices. The most active April contract of barley traded up 1.3% from the previous close.

China donates 12,173 tonnes of rice to Zimbabwe to assist vulnerable people that were affected by drought. Donated rice was expected to come in the country by June.
Telangana Govt all set to start paddy procurement.
All arrangements were made for procurement of paddy during Rabi season in the State to ensure minimum support price to farmers. Paddy procurement operations would commence from the next week. The arrangements for procurement of paddy in Rabi season stating that 3,076 paddy purchase centres were opened, during Rabi last year, the corporation procured 8.42 lakh MT of paddy through 1,288 purchase centres. Paddy purchase centres target of procurement of 37 lakh MT. Market arrivals of paddy will be 11.35 lakh MT in April 18.92 LMT in May and 7.57 LMT in June.
India Wheat output to hit record high of 98 million tonnes despite soaring mercury.
India wheat output will not suffer because of increased temperatures, as the crop nearing harvest in the top producing states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh has passed the stage which was vulnerable to the change in weather. The predicted production of the wheat this crop year to be an all-time high at 97-98 million tonnes, or even to touch 100 million mark, said Gyanendra Pratap Singh of the Directorate of Wheat Research at Karnal, Haryana. In Punjab and Haryana, average yields to be 48 quintals per hectare while in some places yields can go as high as 70 quintals per hectare. And the average yield in the country is 31 quintals.
Ukraine exported 5.5 MMT of wheat to Egypt.
In 2016, Ukraine exported 5.5 MMT of wheat and 841 KMT of oilseeds to Egypt that represented over 12% of Ukraine total exports of these crops. Egypt has recently decided to liberalize its phytosanitary requirements to grain imports. In particular, this concerns permissible levels of ergot and ambrosia seeds in cereal and pulse grains.
Uttar Pradesh to pay 10 rupees/100 kg extra for wheat procurement.
Uttar Pradesh will pay 10 rupees over and above the minimum support price for wheat procurement in the state. The incentive given to the farmers to pay labour to load and transport their produce to wheat procurement centres. To eliminate the role of middlemen in procurement operations, the state government will check farmers Aadhar cards and account books while making payments to them. Govt has opened 5,000 procurement centres across the state and govt is targeting to buy 8 million tonne wheat from farmers in the current marketing year against 7.97 million tonne purchased in the previous year.

Govt procured 950,000 tonne wheat in Madhya Pradesh so far in the current marketing year ending March. Govt is buying wheat from farmers at the minimum support price and will use it to build its stocks, and to ensure adequate returns to farmers. The procurement is expected to rise in next two to three days as many farmers believe it is auspicious to sell their crops after Navratri. Madhya Pradesh is expected to produce a record 21.0 million tonne wheat in 2016-17 (Jul-Jun), up from 18.4 million tonne a year ago. Wheat procurement has also begun in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, and government so far purchased nearly 200 tonne of the grain from these states. Govt is targeting to buy 22 million tonne wheat from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in the current crop year ending June. Govt has set its wheat procurement target at 33 million tonne, up from 22.9 million tonne bought a year ago.

Philippine rice production in the first quarter expanded by 5.34 percent to 4.14 million metric tons (MMT), from the 3.93 MMT recorded in the same period last year. The increase in production could be attributed to good weather and the use of high-yielding hybrid rice seeds. A total of 4,142,960 MT was harvested from an area of 997,687 hectares in the first quarter, compared to only 3,932,292 MT, from a bigger area of 1,081,096 hectares during the same period in 2016. Mali (West Africa) expects 8% increase in rice output to 3 million tonne in 2017/18. Mali expects to increase its rice output to 3 million tonnes in the 2017/18 season, about 8% more than the previous crop. Mali (West Africa) is second biggest rice grower after Nigeria. The ministry showed 2.78 million tonnes of rice were produced in 2016/17. The forecast of three million would be over an area of 947,878 hectares cultivated.

Turkish millers imported at least 500,000 million tonne of high protein wheat from alternative Black Sea and European origins for April shipment. Turkish authorities on March 15 ditched tax exemptions of a 130% import duty on wheat imports from Russia. Since then the Turkish flour industry has found itself in need of diversifying its origins. Turkey needs at least 400,000-450,000 million tonne of monthly imports of wheat. At least 100,000 million tonne of Ukrainian wheat has already been purchased. 50,000 million tonne of Hungarian wheat was booked as well as 350,000 million tonne of Latvian and Lithuanian wheat. Turkish millers preferred the quality from the small Baltic states than Hungarian and Ukrainian origin and is very competitively priced. Latvian and Lithuanian annual exports for the 2016-17 marketing year are estimated at less than 2 MMT.
