Tomato prices have recently plummeted from over ₹100 per kilogram to under ₹10 per kilogram. While this drop benefits consumers, it’s causing significant hardships for farmers. Despite investing heavily in planting and safeguarding their crops, farmers are unable to recover their expenses. This price decline has made their financial situation even worse, and they are concerned about the future of tomato farming.
Some farmers have explained that when they initially planted their crops, the price was ₹900 per can, but now it has fallen to just ₹100, leaving them unable to cover even basic costs. In an effort to fetch better prices, some are sending their tomatoes to larger cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Hyderabad. However, there is the risk of tomatoes spoiling before they can be sold, leading to further losses. Many farmers are now calling on the government for assistance, asking for a minimum price guarantee or financial aid.
